The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) (Hindi:भारत-तिब्बत सीमा पुलिस बल) is one of the five Central Armed Police Forces of India, raised on 24 October 1962, under the CRPF Act, in the wake of the Sino-Indian War of 1962. The ITBP was intended for deployment along India’s border with Chinese-occupied Tibet. The first head of the ITBP, designated Inspector General, was Balbir Singh, a police officer previously belonging to the Intelligence Bureau. The ITBP, which started with 4 battalions, has since restructuring in 1978 has undergone expansion to a force of 45 battalions with 4 more being raised as of 2013.  The ITBP is trained in Civil Medical Camp, disaster management, and nuclear, biological and chemical disasters. ITBP personnel have been deployed abroad in UN peacekeeping missions in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Haiti, Western Sahara, Sudan, Afghanistan and elsewhere.  Two battalions of ITBP are deputed to NDRF(NATIONAL DISASTER RESPONSIVE FORCE).  ITBP along with BSF has not only been guarding and securing the nation’s boarders but it has been participating in the internal activities like “Swachh Ganga” Mission and support growth of the nation. ITBP recruits male & female Indian citizens (including a subject of Nepal & Bhutan) for filling up vacancies in the department. (i) For candidates falling in the categories of Garhwalis, Kumaonis, Gorkhas, Dogras, Marathas and candidates belonging to the states of Sikkim, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Kashmir and Leh & Ladakh regions of J&K  :

Height : 165 cms

Chest :  78-83 cms

(ii) For all States and Union Territories (except categories mentioned above) :

Height :  170 cms

Chest :  80-85 cms

(iii) For Candidates belonging to Schedule Tribes (ST) :

Height :  162.5 cms

Chest :  76-81 cms


The candidates, who qualify the Height Bar Test, will be subjected to 5 Kms Race in 24 minutes to qualify for further tests. No marks will be awarded for race and it will only be qualifying in nature. Those who do not qualify the race will be eliminated.


Candidates who qualify Race and PST will be subjected to the biometric identification to obviate impersonation by the candidates.


  1.  Eye Sight (i) The minimum distant vision should be 6/6 and 6/9 of both eyes without correction i.e. without wearing of glasses.
  2. The candidates must not have knock knee, flat foot, varicose vein or squint in eyes and they should possess high colour vision. They must be in good mental and bodily health and free from any physical defect likely to interfere with the efficient performance of the duties.
  3. A colour blind person will not be eligible for appointment. If any stage of service career, a person is found to be colour blind, he will be boarded out as per SHAPE policy in vogue.
  4. Tattoos :  Any candidate with a small engraving/tattoo of name or religious symbol on the inner face of the arms or hands is permitted for recruitment. Candidates having permanent tattoo on any part of the body will be debarred for recruitment.


  • The exam is OMR examination
  • The examination is for 100 marks and time is 3 hours
  • Qualifying mark 35% for general and 33% for reserved
  • There is skill test for qualified candidates for 20 marks

Skill Test for Steno :-

The candidates, who qualify the above written examination, shall be required to appear in the skill test i.e. shorthand and typing given as under:- i) Dictation – 10 minutes @ 80 words per minute (English or Hindi). ii) Transcription- 50 minutes in English on computer; or 65 minutes in Hindi on computer.


Merit lists in each category namely, Gen, SC, ST, OBC(NCL) and Ex-servicemen will be drawn on the basis of total marks obtained by the candidates in the written examination. The candidates shall be shortlisted for Verification of Original Documents/Certificates and Detailed Medical Examination (DME) as per the category wise vacancies on the basis of this merit. Extended list shall also be prepared to cover the shortfall due to failure of candidates in DME and Review Medical Examination (RME). However, there shall be no reserve list.


 The candidates are advised to go through the recruitment notification and confirm their eligibility in all respect before submitting an application. The mobile phone, camera or any electronic devices are not permitted inside the recruitment venues. The candidates are advised not to carry any such device with them.   Selection in ITBP is fair and on merit only. Candidates should not fall prey to unscrupulous persons posing as Recruitment Agents. For complaint against such persons, candidate must approach Second-in-Command (Vigilance), Vigilance Branch, ITBP HQ, Block No. 4, CGO Complex Lodhi Road, New Delhi – 03.
